Finally! 3G lovin’ in Omaha!

My mom clipped out an article from the paper today that confirmed something I already knew, but it was nice to see it official and in print.

Due to the release of the second-generation iPhone, which has 3G (HSDPA; High Speed Downlink Access Packet; broadband Internet on your phone) AT&T was finally kicked in the collective butts and decided to upgrade its network in Omaha to include the higher speeds.

Finally, HSDPA in Omaha!!

I have no phones currently that can take advantage of these speeds since all of mine are either 2G or 3G but Europe-only.  But the new phones I buy at the end of this year will have all the necessary frequency bands and I’ll be able to take advantage of the faster speeds.  I’m very excited.

The downside to all of this is that battery life will take a dive.  3G takes more battery to run, so whereas before I can get 9 hours of talk time on a Sony Ericsson phone, I’ll be pulling 4 hours when HSDPA is rolled out.  But I think I’ll manage.  Plus, if it bothers me, I think I can switch back to the 2G network if I plan to talk a lot.

Anyway, I utterly despise the iPhone, but if any good comes out of it, it’s this.

EDIT (7-1-2008): To clarify, since a lot of people still view this post (I’m glad to see so many people from Omaha are instrested in this), HSDPA will not be turned on until “later this year.”  It could be as early as July or as late as October-November.  I’ll definitely make a note of it when it’s on.

EDIT (7-12-2008): In today’s World-Herald, November is pegged as the exact month HSDPA will be rolled out in the Metro area.

UPDATE: It’s here.

  1. I am reading this and am excited, however, from what I understand there are UMTS/HSPDA towers up in Omaha, but not turned on yet…is that what you are referring to. Also, no 3g coverage is shown on the ATT coverage viewer online.

  2. Yup, no HSDPA yet. Sometime “this year” is all they’re saying. (Same for Lincoln.)

I wouldn’t doubt they have the technology in place (or are getting it set up as we speak), but as of now there is no 3G actually turned on, as you said.

The 3G iPhone will be released next month, but I don’t know if they’ll be ready in time (in Omaha) for that—lots of testing to do. My guess is somewhere in the Sept-Nov range they’ll flip the switch. Or since I’ve been hearing about this since November of last year, maybe they’ve been doing the testing all along and will be ready for the iPhone launch. Don’t know.

Back when I was on Verizon and they were setting up 3G in Omaha, my phone would switch from 1X to EV constantly for about two weeks before they finally got everything set up. I don’t know if it will be the same with AT&T or not.

  3. Yeah, thanks for the input. I don’t know what to think. I just hope sooner than later would be nice. As usual, no one at ATT can tell anything, but today they told me UTMS towers were up all over, just not turned on.

  4. Wouldn’t surprise me. They may be waiting for the “right time,” whatever that is. Again, maybe the iPhone launch if we’re lucky.

The odd thing is that Omaha and Lincoln got MediaFLO mobile TV service before they got 3G.

  5. Last year, an AT&T sales rep at a corporate store said “in a few months, 3G would arrive in omaha.” That was in June. A whole year later it is not on yet. A guy at radioshack said November/January. Either way, it’ll be great.

  6. any new information, I hope it’s about go time in Omaha for ATT’s 3G network. Hoping, crossing fingers for October launch.

  7. Nope, nothing, though I was at Mega Mart and they quoted October too. We shall see.

  8. I was at the AT&T store (144 Center) last month and they said Lincoln would be live any day, Omaha to follow shortly. My Aircard is still running edge in Lincoln so take it for what it’s worth. Hopefully the coverage will be better also, they said there will be more towers when they power it up.

I noticed a really strange portable “Tower” in a truck at the main post office in Lincoln last week, looked like GSM antennas, wonder if they have to fill in a dead spot on game day. Had a really large boom on it like a TV truck. Anyone else see that?

  9. I heard today from my AT&T Corporate Rep that 3G in Omaha has been delayed to December 5th due to AT&T network engineers bieng redeployed to TX for Hurricane repairs.
ALSO.. AT&T is going to redeploy 859MHZ spectrum in Omaha next year. This will greatly improve signal penetration / coverage in buildings.

  10. Yes! I bought an iPhone 3G a few months ago and have been waiting for 3G service to come to Omaha. I can’t wait for the 3G icon to appear on my iPhone! 🙂

  11. Any more news on 3G in Omaha? I’m still hopeful for November, but my hopes are fading. Tell me you have some news.

  12. Greetings,

I came across this site via Google and had to pass along a note. I called up a local AT&T store and was told that, hopefully, things will be on December 14th. She said that the date was not firm, though. I wish we could get some confirmation as I am waiting on 3G before going back to AT&T since Edge service is spotty in NW Omaha.

  13. As of 12:00 A.M. on Dec 5th AT&T 3G in Omaha is LIVE..
    WOOT!!!!!!!
